Edward Cuesta and Manuel Matos during the interview with ElDinero.
In the United States there are around two million people of Dominican descent and a large part is disconnected from the country as of the third or fourth generation. The mission of Dominicanos USA (Dusa) is to strengthen the connection between the Dominican Republic and its diaspora in the United States, explaining in both countries the importance of maintaining these links.
Edward Cuesta, executive director of the entity, and Manuel Matos, president, indicate that with this objective they have developed several projects that help to locate the Dominican community and bring it closer to the country.
The statistics of the non-profit organization have been very useful for the US authorities. While in the Dominican part, Dusa highlights the value of the connection with the diaspora for the welfare of the country.
“There is a value for both countries of maintaining those strong links. An example for the Dominican Republic are remittances, which represent a high percentage of gross domestic product, “said Matos.
However, after the second or third generation, Dominicans do not send money to the country, so it is possible to accurately project how remittances from the United States are decreasing.
