New York City –\u00a0Following a successful first year as\u00a0the\u00a0nation\u2019s first and only\u00a0voter registration, mobilization, and education organization geared towards Dominican American voters, Dominicanos USA (DUSA)\u00a0on Thursday\u00a0revealed\u00a0it had registered more than 75,000 Dominican Americans in their first year\u00a0of\u00a0voter registration\u00a0efforts, tripling the number of registrants since the organization\u2019s launch last year.
\n
\nDUSA also unveiled the findings of\u00a0a groundbreaking\u00a0political\u00a0research\u00a0project\u00a0and focus groups on Dominican-American political perceptions and attitudes.\u00a0The poll was conducted in partnership with Latino Decisions, a top Latino political opinion and research firm. The top findings include:
\n1)\u00a0The most important issues to Dominican American voters and potential voters are\u00a0jobs and the economy (29%), school reform and improvement\u00a0(23%), and\u00a0housing affordability\u00a0(20%). Additionally, Healthcare\u00a0(7%), and Immigration\u00a0(13%)\u00a0were also issues of concern. Priority issues also varied depending on specific geographic area.<\/p>\n

2)\u00a0Many of those surveyed believe there are considerable barriers to participation that keep them from fully integrating into civic life and that more advocacy would help in that regard. \u00a091% of registered voters believe that more local Dominican-focused civic advocacy groups that help raise the voice of Dominican Americans are needed.<\/p>\n

3)\u00a0 News consumption attitudes found that the majority (70%) of\u00a0Dominican\u00a0Americans surveyed, even those that had assimilated, preferred Spanish-language and bilingual news\u00a0outlets to only English language outlets. Specifically 36% of Dominican American voters prefer to consume their information equally in both languages, while 34% prefer exclusively Spanish language.<\/p>\n

4)\u00a0There is a very strong transnationalism in the U.S.-based Dominican American community. \u00a070% of Dominican-Americans surveyed feel a deep-rooted connection with the Dominican Republic that keep them\u00a0interested in and\u00a0knowledgeable about\u00a0issues that are happening on the island nation. \u00a043% have a medium level of engagement with island affairs while 27% are highly engaged.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis first-of its kind, ground-breaking research commissioned by DUSA and executed by Latino Decisions, comes at the perfect time for our organization to\u00a0prioritize and maximize our resources in order to educate and mobilize Dominican Americans on the issues they care most about,\u201d\u00a0said\u00a0Manuel Matos, attorney, community leader, and DUSA board member who serves as the group\u2019s spokesperson. \u00a0\u201cIt also gives us an opportunity to continue learning the best and most effective ways to communicate to this vital and potentially powerful community who is hungry for better and more robust advocacy and help in navigating the democratic process so they can become full fledged participants in civic life.”<\/p>\n

The survey findings, coupled with\u00a0the\u00a0unprecedented\u00a075,000\u00a0voters DUSA\u00a0has\u00a0already registered\u00a0in the last year,\u00a0underscore\u00a0the potential that exists for Dominican-American voters to become much more involved in local, state, and national elections.<\/p>\n

“DUSA is answering\u00a0this call to elevate the voice of Dominicans and we recognize\u00a0that the work does not end with voter registration alone.\u00a0 We look forward to engaging many more Dominican American voters, helping them become the architects of their own futures and that of their families in this great country,” said Matos.<\/p>\n

\u201cAccording to the study, wages, jobs and the economy, education, and housing are\u00a0the top issues of\u00a0critical importance to our community, which underscores the misperception that Latino communities are only concerned with issues of immigration,\u201d said Eddie Cuesta, DUSA\u2019s New York State Director. “Moving forward, DUSA is committed to helping\u00a0the\u00a0community\u00a0find meaningful ways of having their voices heard on\u00a0these issues, and of holding their elected officials accountable to fully represent their community.”<\/p>\n
