- Permanent Resident Status (Green Card): Before applying for U.S. citizenship, you must have been a lawful permanent resident (green card holder) for a certain period, typically five years. In some cases, this period may be reduced to three years if you are married to a U.S. citizen.
- Physical Presence and Continuous Residence: During the required residency period, you must have been physically present in the United States for at least half of the time. Additionally, you should not have had any trips outside the country that lasted for more than six months.

- Selective Service Registration: If you are a male between the ages of 18 and 26, you must register with the Selective Service System.
