Become a U.S. Citizen in 2024: Simple Steps for Success

The process of becoming a U.S citizen can be daunting and overwhelming, that’s why since 2016, Dominicanos USA (DUSA) has been committed to assisting legal permament residents with their process from start to finish and has proudly helped to place over 10,000+ people on the path to citizenship.

Our team of experts help individuals find out if they’re eligible for naturalization, help them complete the N-400 citizenship application, provide resources to help prepare them for the interview and see it through that they are able to make their voice heard by registering to vote. The best part? Our assistance is completely free!

To get started on your U.S citizen process, you need to meet the requirements:

  1. Permanent Resident Status (Green Card): Before applying for U.S. citizenship, you must have been a lawful permanent resident (green card holder) for a certain period, typically five years. In some cases, this period may be reduced to three years if you are married to a U.S. citizen.
  2. Physical Presence and Continuous Residence: During the required residency period, you must have been physically present in the United States for at least half of the time. Additionally, you should not have had any trips outside the country that lasted for more than six months.
  3. Good Moral Character: You must demonstrate good moral character during the qualifying period. Certain criminal convictions, immigration violations, or other issues may affect your ability to establish good moral character.
  4. English Language Proficiency: You need to demonstrate the ability to read, write, speak, and understand basic English. There are exceptions and accommodations for certain individuals, such as those with a qualifying medical condition. USCIS is recommending that the applicant needs to read, write, and speak English to submit the N-400 application.
  5. Knowledge of U.S. Government and History: You must pass a civics test, which assesses your knowledge of U.S. government and history. This typically involves answering questions about the country’s political system, history, and geography.
  6. Oath of Allegiance: If your application is approved, you must take the Oath of Allegiance to the United States. This oath signifies your commitment to the principles and laws of the U.S.
  7. Selective Service Registration: If you are a male between the ages of 18 and 26, you must register with the Selective Service System.

Tips for Success:

1.Prepare in advance: The U.S. citizenship application (Form N-400) requires details on children, marital/spousal status, and travel history from the past 5 years. Ensure you collect all necessary information before beginning the application process.

2. English Language Proficiency: Practice your English skills regularly. Utilize language learning resources and consider enrolling in English language classes if needed. Dominicanos USA offers a in-person 6-week English class.

3. Civics Test Preparation: Study U.S. government and history thoroughly. Many resources, including online practice tests, are available to help you prepare for the civics test. On Instagram, we feature citizenship practice videos.

4. Mock Interviews: Conduct mock interviews to simulate the USCIS interview process. Practice answering potential questions confidently and clearly.

5. Seek Assistance: If you encounter challenges or have questions during the application process, don’t hesitate to seek guidance from immigration professionals or legal experts. You can reach out to our team by emailing [email protected] or calling us at (718) 665-0400
